Movie Review: ENGLISH VINGLISH

English Vinglish is a movie starred by Sridevi as mother from Sapna (Mehdi Nebbou) and Sagar(Priya Anand). This movie is directed by Gauri Shinde and produced by Hope Production. Shashi is a mother who loves cooking and make ladoo. Sapna and also Shashi’s husband, Satish (Adil Hussain), don’t appreciate her, just because her poor English. But, her little son, Sagar, love he just the way she is. English Vinglish have Amitabh Bachchan as guest role. And it’s use Hindi language.

English Vinglish is the story of a woman named Shashi, and she is made to feel insecure by her family because her lack of ability to speak in English. Not only that, sometimes she felt that she was just a maid. But not because she looks old-fashioned with her sari. It’s just because her daughter who don’t respect her. For example, when she attended a meeting of PTA (Parent-Teacher Association), her daughter was embarrassed because her mother couldn’t speak English, not like her father.

Shashi also feel more depressed because her husband was very busy with his business.

One day, Shasi’s niece in New York is going to held a marriage. They invite Shashi’s family to come to New York to attend the wedding. At the time, her husband decide to asked Shashi leave first, whereas her husband and her children will come when the wedding day. Shashi was very surprised by her husband’s decision, because it’s impossible.  She was afraid because she doesn’t know English. It is so hard for Shashi to leave alone and leave her family, but she must do it.

Finally, Shashi still have to go alone. Fortunately, she met a good guy sit next to her. He understand that Shashi can’t speak English well. He help Shashi and give support to always confident although it’s a first experience. And after arriving in the United States of America, she was so confused. She didn’t know what to do because she didn’t understand what the people are talking about. Until  then she saw an advertisement “Learn to Speak English in 4 weeks.” After that, she decide to join the course.

Shashi willing to take the her saving for sign up the course, but she hide this course from her familiy. Therefore she’s always looking for the reasons to go to the course. Until her niece know that she followed the English course, but she was happy because her niece named Radha instead very supportive.

After about three weeks of attending the course, Shashi was surprised when she saw her family already in the house. She was very happy, but she was also confused about continuation of the course. However, she was very lucky because she has a niece like Radha. Her niece was the one who helped give some reason so she can keep it going.

Final days before the exam of the course, she’s got a problem. So she couldn’t join the course. But when the wedding day, her friends who join the course attended Meera’s wedding. And she was glad because she’s got a chance to speech in Meera and Kevin’s wedding. At the time, she really show that she can speak in English very well. And when she said, “Family is the only one who will never laugh your weakness. Family is the only place where you always get love and respect.”, Sapna and Satish very surprised and feel guilty with what’ve the done to Shashi. After the incident, her littleson named Sagar told Sapna that his mom can talk better than her. It means her daughter have to always appreciate her.

Shashi’s speech describe what she feel. Everyone is so excited with what she said. So that Mr. David, her teacher. He give Shashi good score and congrats her for her accomplishment. After that, Shashi became a self assured and confident woman.
